Thanks for checking in with us! This post has four updates: On our sermon series, our children’s ministry, our choir, and our music group.
Preaching Series: Moses, A Regular Guy
It is hard to think any of us can measure up to the Bible’s greatest heroes. It is said of Moses that he met with God face-to-face; he must have been someone special. But was he always such a spiritual giant? What if it turns out that Moses is a lot more like you and me than we think? The lessons we can take from the life of Moses show us that he was not a super-hero. He was a regular person who, just at the time God called on him, wanted to run away. And don’t think it is too late for God to use you: Moses did not really start the journey toward a life of faith until he was 80 years old!
Children’s Church Begins September 25th
At Elgin Covenant Church we have been keeping our nursery going throughout the summer. Now that the Fall is upon us, Children’s Church is picking up again, for ages four through fourth grade. This coming Sunday, September 25th, we begin with kids in the sanctuary at 10:30 to worship with their families until the reading of the sermon scripture, about 1/2-way through the service.
Choir Fall Break: Invitation to Singers
Our choir got rolling this Fall with a special anthem on our Confirmation Sunday, September 11th, and then followed-up on September 18 with a contemporary rendition of a favorite hymn O God Our Help in Ages Past. The choir will be on hiatus for a few weeks. We are hoping that singers will join us! If you are looking for a church that still provides a quality choir program with a mix of traditional and contemporary anthems and spirituals, we rehearse on Wednesdays at 7 PM starting October 12th and we will begin singing in church October 16th.
Redeemed: The Song-Leader’s Group at Elgin Covenant
Redeemed will be leading two contemporary songs at the worship service on September 25th, accompanied by acoustic guitar. Redeemed practices on Wednesdays at 8:15 immediately following choir. Musicians are welcome to check out the mix when rehearsals resume October 12.
What We are Looking For
At this time we appreciate the unplugged, non-percussive experience of music on Sunday morning. In addition to our choir and Redeemed, our services often include accompaniment or special music from strings, woodwinds and brass. (We have the most awesome young adults’ trombone group in Chicagoland!) If you are interested in being part of this music mix please contact the church and we will put you in touch with Craig Johnson, our music director. Although Sunday morning is closed to electric and percussive groups right now, Pastor Jonathan is interested in developing other worship venues — possibilities include Saturdays, other Sunday times, Friday after school or evening, or other midweek evenings. So if you have an electric bass or a trap-set (or whatever, you get the idea) and a heart for ministry (required!), give us a call and let us discern the Spirit together.
