This Sunday our new Associate Pastor, Greg Johnson, will be leading worship and preaching at our annual “picnic Sunday, and the group “Redeemed” will accompany most of the music. The picnic is held on location at the church. Picnic attire is appropriate as we worship at our normal time of 10:30. This will be followed by lunch for all, and games and activities for kids. All are welcome to our picnic Sunday. Meat and beverages are provided; we ask that those who come bring tableware for their own families and a dessert or side to share with others.
For a few very short weeks in August and September our fellowship is being blessed by Lena Jakobi from Homburg, Germany. Just out of high school, Lena had already been involved with a soup kitchen in her home city. She wanted to see how similar ministries were done in America, and so she has come to Elgin for four weeks to work with Elgin Wayside Center. She is there Monday through Friday during its open hours, and gets back and forth using the PACE bus. Pastor Jonathan and Amy Wilson are very excited to be able to host her as she does this ministry.
A recent report put Kane County in Illinois as one of the most densely-served counties for community service and benevolence ministry in the nation. There are certainly no shortage of opportunities to get involved. Sometimes we are most blind to our own environments and might not see for ourselves that, first of all, there are a great many needs, and second, there are a great many opportunities right near to us to help meet those needs through established benevolence organizations. Hopefully Lena’s presence among us here in Elgin can be a reminder to many of the opportunity to be missionaries to our very own neighbors.
This September 9th we will be installing our new Associate Pastor for Youth and Family Ministry, Greg Johnson. He has been working with us since August 1. The installation on September 9th corresponds with our “Rally Sunday,” when our Fall programming begins. That day will also be marked by an induction of new members to the church. For more about Greg and his family, scroll down to the post that introduces him as a candidate. We are very glad that God has brought the Johnsons to be part of our ministry!
