In 2013 our congregation will be hosting EPIC, a workshop geared to helping people and churches encounter and embrace change in positive ways. EPIC, Empowering People Inspiring Change is the continuation of our vitality project which we launched in 2010. As you can see the phrasing in the acronym can be divided in half, but no comma appears. There are two key themes in EPIC: First, to empower people by inspiring them to embrace the changes that happen. Second, is to empower the very people who are the ones inspiring change. Rather than quenching the spirits of the change agents, EPIC equips the wider congregation in ways to support and encourage the change agents.
Peter Sjoblom, the Central Conference Director of Vitality, will be our coach through EPIC. We are meeting on the first Monday in March, the first Monday in April, and a date in May to be determined. The sessions will go from 7 PM to around 9 PM.
Some outcomes of our vitality project are that since 2010 we have increased in both worship attendance and formal membership by about 15%. We have raised change agents into leadership by assembling a Vitality Team, and we called a change agent, our Associate Pastor for Youth and Families, Greg Johnson, to join the staff. Participation in our choir and praise team has increased since 2011-12, and for the first time since 2009 our budget as a church is growing rather than contracting.
These are exciting times to be part of the Evangelical Covenant Church of Elgin. God has been faithful to keep us encouraged through the lean economic times that our whole nation has faced. You are welcome to be part of what God is building and doing in our midst as we continue in our witness to our city and our world.
