Lent and Holy Week Observances

Ash Wednesday, February 22nd, 7 PM

Although our worship is more in the “free church” than “liturgical” tradition, we at Elgin Covenant do mark the traditional seasons of the church year. Lent begins on “Ash Wednesday,” which falls this year on February 22nd. We will celebrate the beginning of Lent at 7 PM with a service of prayer and preaching. Dr. Daryl Rahfeldt will bring the message, “Are You Ready for Jesus?”

Lent Preaching Series

On Sunday mornings during Lent, Pastor Jonathan Wilson will preach at the 10:30 service based on the words Jesus spoke from the cross.  A Children’s Message is a regular part of the worship, early in the service. A staffed nursery is available. Children’s Church dismisses to their classroom during the offering.

February 26th, “Father, forgive them.”

March 4, “Today you will be with me in Paradise”   (This service will include Communion)

March 11th , “Here is your son.”

March 18th, “Why have you forsaken me?”

March 25th, “It is Finished.”

Family Lent Devotional Circle

On Sunday evenings during Lent, please join us at 6:30  for the Family Lent Devotional in our Fellowship Hall. An informal time of music will be followed by a devotional study, Jesus and the Great Story of God. The booklets are available for free. This study begins February 26th and runs through March 25th.

Rather than staffing a nursery or child-care, this devotional circle is intended to include the whole family, without judgment or frowns at “disruptions.” Jesus instructed his followers to be patient with children (Matthew 19:13-15).  A play area in the same room will be available if children get too antsy to sit. Our goal is to show the young by example  that going to church can be a quality “family” time.

Holy Week

We will have more announcements about Holy Week, Easter celebrations and spring programming as we get closer to Palm Sunday.  This year Palm Sunday is April 1. Our Youth Pastor, Braden Britton, will preach at the 10:30 service. Communion will follow.

On Thursday of that week, April 5, Elgin Covenant will gather for a special worship service at 7 PM. This will also include communion in a special format. We practice “open” communion. This means that all who believe that Jesus Christ is their savior from sins and look forward to eternal life in his presence are invited and welcome to take communion in a Covenant Church.

Stay tuned for details about Good Friday worship. Elgin Covenant plans to participate in a joint service with other churches from the area.
